Where Evil Is

We seem to have a certain fascination with evil acts and the people who commit them. They murdering psychopath character has become a staple diet of several TV detective programs and movies. And there is an almost cult-like following for the more famous evil ones from our history, such as Stalin or Hitler.

These modern ways of portraying evil people neatly compartmentalizes them, it wraps them up in psycho-jargon and stereotypes, it sorts them out from the rest of us good folk. So we can sleep safe at night and by day we can use a handy ‘how to spot a psychopath’ guide to weed out those who have crossed over to the dark-side in our midst.

However, as the Russian author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn reminds us:

“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
